As I tried to cobble together my most “indie rock” outfit I listened to Silicon on repeat, desperately trying to catch a line or two to accompany my well rehearsed “dubstep” inspired shoulder dance. I finally settled on a Topshop tiger print sweater in the style of Versace, red lips, a vintage chain, baby pink jeans and black, gold heeled booties. Feeling suitably attired and with my little black book tucked under my arm, I made my way to the Leadmill venue; a dingy place with a stage the size of a dining table.
I stood sipping cider through two cherry picked indie rock bands that, if I was a member of SOG, would make me quake in my boots with fear of being upstaged. With the venue justly busting at the seams SOG made their way to the stage with Metcalfe supporting a Gallagher inspired trench coat. The intimacy of a SOG gig is what makes it so special. My initial worries and woes about the stage size proved unnecessary, as Andy rarely used it. The fruit salad of an audience sand lustily along to crowd pleasers 'Elementary Of Youth' and 'Architects' from 2010's What Came From Fire as well as the new tracks like 'Sometimes' and the beautiful 'The Leaning' from new album Angels And Enemies. SOG have a following which they have collected from their early days, this cluster of authentic indie rockers know every word, beat and melody down to a T; and this is a club you do want to be a part of.
Metcalfe allowed his audience to sing along to the conventional ‘oh oh oohs' as he watched with appreciation. The crowd was possibly more tame than SOG expect and even deserve, but that being said the gig was exemplary and proved that recordings can no longer do a band justice.
If you have not seen SOG live, what have you been doing!?
9/10
